So today I went out to the field with an open attitude. I decided that I was gonna try some different things and see how Woody reacted to them and see if that helped me figure out his Horsenality. So, first I spent undemanding time with him, for about 20 minutes. He ended up taking a nap right next to me which was nice. Then I went to the tack room to get his halter, 12 foot line, and 22 foot line. I haltered him and head off to the round pen.
Once I arrived I went to set up a barrel jump, cone slalom, and laid down a couple of hula hoops and PVC pipes here and there. Woody and I started playing on the 12 foot line with some of the obstacles, and he displayed his usual ears back neutral position, looking at me with absolutely no interest. I figured that maybe a 22 foot line would spark his interest, so I switched and there was o change in his attitude. He was doing everything I asked of him, just not with enthusiasm or interest.
I decided to take off the lead line and see if he would even follow me or if I should play the catching game to spark his interest in me. He followed me around fine at the walk, but when I started trotting he kept walking looking very bored. He then turned around and left me at which point I decided to try something new. When he left, I turned around and tagged him on the butt and he took off, ears forward (one pointed in my direction) and trotting. I then asked him to canter by using the stick and smooching and he cantered round and round, jumping the barrels each time he came to it. went I disengaged his hind quarters he whirled around and trotted right up to me ears forward. This was quite a change because usually when disengaging his hindquarters from a circle he turns and faces and stands there. He put his head down, licked and chewed, and snorted. I then started walking and he followed me around and then I started to jog and followed me. We then started playing and I had more energy and life in my body and he mirrored me. We played more circle and he would run around, and when I asked for change of direction by backing up, he whirled and trotted to me, then took off in the other direction, even putting in a little buck.
I learned that this horse sometimes (maybe even all the time, not quite sure yet) has a high energy, run around, give me a job kind of attitude, which is what a Left Brained Extrovert is. I am licking and chewing very much from this experience because he seemed so playful and had his ears forward and a "what's she gonna do next?" attitude. He then followed me all the way back to the barn right behind me, with no halter on. I gave him a cookie and called it a great day.
I can't wait to see what happens tomorrow in our play session. I now know my ultimate challenge with Woody is going to be, how do I get him to show that exuberance and interest on line and under saddle?
