Tending to the Pasture and Other Antics

Yesterday was the first non-rainy day of this spring break week of mine, so finally Mom and I went out to the pasture to see the ponies. Number one on our agenda was to spread grass seed in the middle pasture. I was put on spreading-manure duty and Mom went around spreading the seed. After we finally finished that load of work, we went on to spreading old hay on top of the seed. That's when the antics started. Woody and Charlotte looked at Mom and I and, not to anthropormorphize those two, I could imagine them thinking, "Wrong side of the fence idiot." They proceeded to stare at us, and Mom pointed out to me how interesting it was that now all the sudden Woody was absolutely riveted by me. Once they were bored with staring at us, the thought crosses their mind that "Hey! There must be an opening to that pasture that they are waiting for us to find!" Therefore, they both took off racing each other, hugging to fence to find an opening. They ran for sveral laps around the pasture, and they eventually stopped at the top of the hill. We watched as Charlotte began backing her rear into Woody's front, asking him to back up with her. It was so sool to watch and I so badly wish I had my video camera to film it, because it looked exactly like the task of backing up and your horse backing with you! After we finished spreading hay, we got their halters and took them outside to graze while we took a break. Once Wood had eaten a little bit, I led him up to the gravel and we practiced getting really light, going back and forth from eating grass to resting on the gravel. He began to respond much quicker to going off the grass with just a little pressure on the zone 4 and draw on zone 1, because he knew I would let him eat grass again later. I amgoing to practice getting him lighter and lighter on the groud outside the fence so that when I ride him he won't be apt to fighting me about grass on his back.
Terrie came out today to trim their feet and said all looks good. She pointed out that Woody looks thinner, which of course made me very happy! We didn't have a lesson, but she will be back in another 5 weeks and we might have one then. Until next time!
